DES Summer Programme 2020

Launched on Friday 12th June 2020

Summer Programme 2020

The Department of Education and Skills (DES) announced the details of a Summer Programme on Friday 12th June 2020. This programme has three strands:

  1. School Based - where the programme is run in the school
  2. Home Based - where parents find a tutor (teacher or SNA) to provide 10 hrs per week tuition at home (for 4 weeks throughout July / August)
  3. HSE led service - we have been provided with no further details on this to date, other than information on

Due to insufficient staff volunteering in previous years, we were not planning to provide a July Provision Programme in the school this year. With all the uncertainty in relation to the programme announced by the DES, and the lack of guidance on how to re-open schools safely, it is difficult to see this changing.

Apart from the information on the DES website ( and in the media, we have limited information on the other two strands i.e. Home Based and HSE-Led Strand. It remains unclear as to the role of the school in either of these two programmes.

These are some questions commonly asked by parents or tutors and the email for contacting the administrators of the Summer Programme:

Q: Can a parent employ more than one tutor to cover the 40 hours?

A: Yes a parent can employ more than one tutor
Only one form should be completed by the parent and the school – if two tutors are dividing the hours then each tutor needs to complete a timetable and attach all documents together when sending into the Department

Q: Can a tutor be employed by more than one family?

A: Yes a tutor can deliver the Home Programme for up to 7 pupils on a one to one basis provided they adhere to the guidelines set out on the under link

The website will be updated with any further relevant information in due course.
